We made the trek up to Baltimore Friday night to see Stephen Lynch on the Johns Hopkins campus. We got there a bit early, to avoid traffic, and walked around the campus. How bizarre. It is sort of a mini-Virginia Tech planted into the middle of a city. All the buildings are really old and they are situated in quads, with grass in between where students were out playing football and tossing discs. It took us quite a while to find Shriver Hall, where Lynch was playing, because not a single student knew what Shriver Hall was. We found a campus police officer and he didn't know either. So, we asked if there was an auditorium on campus. That seemed more familiar to him and he pointed us to the far end of campus, luckily near where we had parked. Sure enough, Shriver was there and it was very close to dinner, so we set off to eat.
We ate at a place called Niwana. It is a Japanese and Korean restaurant. The menu has a lot of sushi offerings as well as Korean favorites like kalbi and bibimbap (or as i like to call it bee bam bop) We shared a tempura appetizer and veggie dumplings while we waited for the rest of our party to arrive. Unfortunately, they were stuck in traffic and didn't make it to dinner, and we were full from the appetizers, so we didn't get to try any of their other dishes. So, we set off to see the show.
We arrived at the auditorium and saw a long line forming, we quickly jumped in and waited for the doors to open. Promptly at 7, the doors opened and everyone scattered in trying to get good seats. We grabbed aisle seats in the 7th row and watched the college kids roll in... and the 15 year olds. What? 15 year olds? That's crazy, Lynch is for a very mature audience with new favorites such as "Cream of Wife" and old favorites like "For the Ladies". Anyway, we watched as many of the kids arrived looking for their seats. Yep, that's right, seat "GAX1", otherwise known and written on the ticket as "General Admission". It was pretty funny watching people try to find section GAX1 and seat numbers.
Lynch was running a little late, so the show started around 8:15. From start to finish, it was hilarious. He had two sidekicks with him and they were pretty funny too. He started something new in this show where he read "diaries" to us. They were completely hilarious and naughty. He didn't get to some of the old favorites that we were hoping to hear, but his new ones were good, including "PEANUTS!", a little song about Charlie Brown and the rest of "PEANUTS!". It's almost better that he didn't get to some of his old stuff, because the family behind us was singing every word, every inflection, every side note when Lynch did. To say it was irritating is an understatement. They pretty much ruined all the punch lines for the people who had never been there before and just annoyed the rest of us. So, the new stuff was good because they couldn't sing a long, and luckily any old songs Lynch played had new verses. That was awesome too.
