What has Bush done for us today?

The Bush administration issued final rules about the Title IX anti-discrimination law. Some of you may recall in Title IX from high school. I played basketball in high school and I remember that one day a bunch of school administrators came into the locker room checking out our accommodations. It appeared that our locker room wasn't as good as the boy's, so we got some upgrades, showers that worked, and I think we got a bunch of additional lockers as well. That was my first introduction to Title IX, that if you give stuff to boys, you better give the same stuff to girls.

So today, Bush's new Title IX rules state that you can segregate classes based on sex. In fact, you can also segregate an entire school if you wish. The only requirement is that you offer a coed "similar" class or school. Now, maybe you're wondering why that is such a problem. You are probably a guy.

Let's take an example. These rules allow school administrators to segregate all the "smart" boys into a math class with the school's best math teacher. The remaining "slow" boys and all girls could be placed in the "leftover" coed math class with a 2nd best teacher. Immediately, the equality of the education starts to deteriorate.

The proponents for these rules say that same-sex classes can improve attendance and comfort level in the classroom. I believe that parents should be improving attendance, they have to be accountable.  If the problem is social anxiety or comfort level issues, kids need to work through that when they are young.  If boys and girls don't learn to work together at an early age, what will motivate them to work together when they are older?  We already see these issues in the older generations with good ole boys networks. I don't believe we will be able to effectively work together within our nation, and much less outside our nation, if we promote segregation.
