pass/fail?

i followed a student driver down waxpool this morning on my way to work. she annoyingly followed all of the rules of the road. when i expected her to choke at the 4 way stop (where no one knows when they are supposed to go, EVER) she handled her self beautifully. that was until...

she mistook the shoulder as a second lane. yeah she went ahead and created her own lane. in her defense it was a large shoulder, but come on. when someone finally pointed it out she simply signaled and came back on over to the place where normal people drive.

think she will pass?

reminds me of a story about my "behind the wheel" experience. i had learned to drive one of the most difficult vehicles off the bat. my dads 82 Toyota 4wd pickup. 33" tires (not lifted mind you, fenders knocked in with a hammer to allow the tires to clear), no power steering, stick (which when you were in gear you could still move like it was in neutral). i was a skinny kid and turning that thing on those tires was a bitch, that was if you could find any one of the low gears in that gearbox (seriously though, put a baseball bat in an empty 5 gallon bucket, that is what this gearbox felt like).

aaaaanyway, point of that, i learned on a stick. i had never driven an automatic. day one of my behind the wheel i hopped in, buckled up, checked mirrors, and backed out of the driveway. force of habit, grabbed the gear selector and pushed it forward (1st gear in my head) and hit the gas. very loud roar of the engine and we were not going anywhere.

apparently all the way forward in an auto is park. i know that now.
